Let me start by saying that HDTV antenna is not different from a TV antenna. It's a marketing hype to try to sell TV antennas with a new label. There is a difference between an HD signal and an analog signal (TV broadcast today). Thanks to the broadcast, a weak signal will result in an image of snow, with the HD broadcast; you will not get a picture. Unless you have a good antenna, you will only receive the HD stations with low signal your old TV. This also applies if you use a tele converter. Ninety percent of all HD channels are on UHF.
Step 1:
If you have a receipt of your UHF / VHF channels today, then you're more likely not to have to change your TV antenna. You should get a good broadcast HD on your HDTV or converter.
Step 2:
If you receive some VHF / UHF channels, you will need to invest in a good roof mounted TV antenna for VHF / UHF broadcast. Goto: http://antennaweb.org/aw/welcome.aspx and select "Choose an antenna. The only information required is your zip code and answer two questions.
Step 3:
The next screen shows a map of your region. If the card is correct, select continue.
Step 4:
On the next screen you will see a list of television stations, their compass heading, and the approximate mileage from your house. There is much information on this page will help you determine the size of an antenna you need to buy.
Step 5:
So that your antenna will determine what television channels you receive. If there is television stations in the opposite direction of where your antenna is pointing at you do not receive them.
Step 6:
To receive TV channels from all directions, you have two choices: (1) Buy an antenna rotor so that you will be able to change the orientation of your antenna from your house. (2) Buy an Omni directional TV antenna that lets you receive TV channels from all directions.
